Nutrition

Before we go any further, let’s get a few things straight.

There are no “good” and “bad” foods. There are only foods that make you feel good and foods that do not. A healthy diet should be a balance of foods that feed your soul and fuel your body.

There are two universal truths.

If you seek to lose fat, you must eat in a caloric deficit*. Those calories can consist of anything. However, if you neglect nutrients and eat for immediate gratification only, your energy levels and strength performance may suffer. If you stave off all indulgences and only consume nutrient-dense foods, you may struggle with adherence and develop a dangerously toxic relationship with food.

If you seek to put on muscle, you must eat in a caloric surplus.* Again, those calories can consist of anything. However, when building muscle, it is important to maintain energy levels and progressive overload (lifting heavier weight over time). Not eating enough nutrient-dense foods will make this very difficult. However, don’t swear off all the fun stuff. Enjoy your bulk, you can always cut when you’re done.

*Medical conditions and hormonal factors can affect weight loss/gain, but do not make it impossible.
